Titan Souls
Titan Souls is an action-adventure indie game developed by British Acid Nerve studio in 2015. In this game, you play as a lonely archer who has only one arrow to fight enemies. Your mission is to find and defeat monstrous Titans. The point is that the hero can’t do anything on the go, so he is an easy target for everyone. You can download Titan Souls for PS4 and PS Vita on PlayStation™Store.
Graphics – 5/5
Titan Souls game is powered by a custom engine created by lead writer, designer, and programmer of the game, Mark Foster. He managed to create the original version using Adobe Flash and then ported it into the new engine. It is preserved in isometric 2D pixel-art style with organic blotches of 3D animation in boss fights. Though the market is overflowing with pixel-art franchises, this one is incredibly recognizable.
Gameplay – 5/5
Titan Souls gameplay is a combination of real-time strategy with turn-based fighting. These incompatible things resulted in a hardcore battle mechanic. You have to manage your moves fast enough to avoid enemy hits at the time of attacking. You have only a single arrow and shooting it is already a complete action. After that, you always have to run to the place where the arrow falls and pick it up to recharge. It takes one more complete step. When the character does something like shooting, he can’t run or walk, so enemies have an opportunity to kill him. To avoid this, you have to learn the boss’s behavior and try to match timings.
You have to take part in 19 boss fights during the Titan Souls full game. Each Titan you meet is endowed with unique powers and appearance. Generally, all of them are big enough to occupy the whole screen, so you have to maneuver between the limbs to survive and find the vulnerabilities of each monster.
Controls – 5/5
This Titan Souls review included controls comparison of the PC version and the version for PS4. Eight of Ten participants from the office voted that DualShock 4 is much more suitable for playing the game of this genre. Though the game is rather difficult, they performed with fewer mistakes on PS4.
Replay Value – 4.5/5
Titan Souls' latest version includes 19 battles with bosses and 3 levels of difficulty, so you can complete the game for 2-3 times to master this hardcore-but-charming franchise. Unfortunately, there are no multiplayer or cooperation modes. On the other hand, you can spend many hours exploring the open world to reveal many secrets.
The Bottom Line
Titan Souls is a great indie title that doesn’t invent anything new but attracts with its fascinating universe and deliberate memorable enemies. The open world of the game is full of picturesque landscapes and secrets so that you may explore it in gaps between boss-fights.
Conclusion
Download Titan Souls to play one of the most picturesque and charming 2D open-world actions.
Pros:
- Well-made proprietary graphical engine
- The challenging fighting system requires tactical thinking
- Great soundtrack by David Fenn
Cons:
- No multiplayer quests and co-op mode
